CITI attends the Maryland Chamber of Commerce: Policy Forum Transportation, 2024

Friday, November 22, 2024

Transportation SMAt the Maryland Chamber of Commerce: Policy Forum Transportation, 2024 it was highlighted that Maryland faces significant challenges in addressing its transportation funding crisis. The ongoing decline in gas tax revenues, coupled with over $4.6 billion in proposed cuts, highlights the urgency of finding sustainable solutions. Discussions about potential measures, such as raising tolls or introducing new fees for electric and hybrid vehicles, underscored the difficult decisions ahead—decisions that won’t come without political resistance.

Yet amidst these challenges, we left the forum feeling hopeful. Secretary Wiedefeld’s presentation outlined practical steps forward, including a strong focus on improving pedestrian and bicyclist safety and the introduction of a new public planning portal to enhance transparency and engage Marylanders in the process. These initiatives represent a meaningful commitment to addressing immediate concerns while fostering community involvement.

Perhaps most inspiring was Baltimore Senator Corey McCray’s powerful message about the transformative potential of transportation. He reminded us that building equitable transit systems is about more than infrastructure—it’s about creating pathways out of poverty by ensuring Marylanders can access jobs and opportunities.

While the 'road' ahead will be challenging, the forum reaffirmed that Maryland’s leaders are dedicated to finding solutions that serve all residents. As Innovation Partners of this event, we believe that we can overcome these obstacles together and work toward a transportation future that is safe, efficient, and equitable.
